It Rubs the Nolan on its Skin

Scene recreation of the “It rubs the lotion on its skin” scene from Silence of the Lambs. All was shot on an Arri Amira cinema camera with an assortment of Sony prime lenses. Created by Aidan Bell and Justin Wilson, edited and colour graded by Aidan Bell. featuring Nolan Bell and Brian from Family Guy. Special thanks to our AD, Olivia. The mise en scene of this segment is very dungeon-esque with dark browns and beige colours in the background and fairly soft lighting on Buffalo Bill’s face. To recreate this scene, we filmed in an old Toronto apartment basement to get as close to a dungeon as possible. We dressed the subject as close as possible to Buffalo Bill by cutting the sleeves off of a blue t-shirt. A plush Brian from Family Guy was used to replicate the dog. Due to height restrictions on the set (the ceiling was about 6 feet high), we ‘cheated’ the low angle shot from the scene by laying the subject down on a cooler and shooting at eye level. We used a kino diva 30 above the subject to generate a slow fall off and positioned a lamp shade in front of the camera as a substitute for the well edge/cliff. We placed a small wooden skid (specifically, a chunk of an Ikea bed frame) at a safe distance in front of a lowel light (our back light) to create a similar ‘striped’ background as it is in the scene. Not only did we make the colours as accurate we could on set, but we also colour graded in post to better match the scene. For the shot of blood on the wall, we recorded at a higher frame rate and used a slight warp-stabilize in post, while tilting the tripod forward and back. We used fake blood leftover from Halloween on the same wall that is in the background of the rest of our shots.
